Climate Change Is Transforming the World's Food Supply
Not only are we losing the amount of food quantity to climate change, we are also losing food to crop pests. Already pests are responsible for 25-40 percent of crop loss and as climate changes they will expand to places they never existed. Plants may not have developed defenses for these pests, but also predators to the pests, like birds, will change their migration time because of climate change. The location of the agriculture in the world will change that will affect the global food supply. Human population growth predicted in the next 50 years will be in the tropics, food production near the equator will decrease. The food quality will decrease because of elevated carbon dioxide levels. Crops grown in elevated carbon dioxide will have lower levels of protein, zinc, and iron.
