Learning outcomes for Sustainability

I have learned so much, like being able to grow crops in a fish tank, and that not everyone has food security. We are so lucky to have food security, and different stakeholders are affected by everything that happens within the food systems. The changes in technology is so fascinating, and technology is improving the production of food, like aquaponics. Some inventions are trying to conserve the amount of water being used, for more sustainability, when there is 9 billion people.

In biology we have started our microbiology unit. We started by collecting soil, to look at the bacteria in it. We also went around the school to see how much bacteria are around the school, like door handles, and hand rails on the stairs. We looked at bacteria from our nose, ear, and tongue. There was only one colony of bacteria for the ear, because Kael had cleaned his ear out that day. But there was lots of bacteria for the nose, and the tongue. At the beginning of the unit a petri dish was passed around and we all touched it and lots of bacteria was on it, despite washing our hands twice.

Lord of the Flies-Book Response

If I were on the island with the boys, I would help in every way possible, building shelters, finding food, and making a fire. I would align myself with Ralph, because he wants to be rescued and to save as many boys as he can. I would do my best to interact with everyone I can, because they have family who love them and want to see them again.

A Bully's Future, From Hard Life to Hard Time

I don't think bullying is a big issue at CSS, I feel like everybody hangs out with their own group and do their own things. I am sure there is bullying at our school but I haven't noticed. People will talk about other people negatively, and someone in that group should stop the conversation. I think bullying is pointless, everybody is different.

Bio update

This week in biology we did presentations on our evolutionary projects. We have started our microbiology unit. We did a worksheet on what is living and characteristics of living things. Now we are studying viruses and how they effect the cells in your body. Tomorrow we have to bring soil to class to study the bacteria in the soil.

Lord of the Flies book response

My thoughts on lord of the flies is, it is a slow book, and i don't get why it is the most popular. The boys are going nuts and the only one trying or thinking of being rescued is Ralph. Even Jack is going nuts because he wants meat, and he is like second in command. Piggy could be a leader because he is smart but all the other boys don not like him. The conflict in the book might be real in some places of the world, maybe that's why he got the nobel prize.

In biology we have gone over the hardy weinberg notes, and have started a project on the evolution of a species. We have to describe the earliest ancestor, a few intermediate forms and the taxonomy of the species. We have also done an assignment on evolution, it was a graphic story that we had to read and fill in the booklet.

The most terrifying fictional evil species

The most terrifying fictional evil species would have to be the little aliens from galaxy quest. They were all eating and a injured alien came to eat, and they all backed up to let him eat, but then they started eating him. Also when the humans came out they started calling for the "rock" to kill them.

Since we have finished our aquaponics our team has been testing the water for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and pH. In biology we have started a new section on deoxyribonucleic acid on the structure of dna, nucleic acids and bases. Making of rna, dna unwinds and complimentary rna bases are brought in, and form sugar-phosphate bonds, then the rna strand is released and the dna molecule rewinds. We are starting the study of evolution, and have done a natural selection handout on variations between mouse populations on the length of their tails.

Qualities that make someone a survivor?

Someone that survives in the bush has knowledge of building a shelter, a fire, and knowing what food you can't and can eat. A survivor also has the ability to use objects around them to build tools, like a fishing trap. In conclusion a survivor uses objects from the forest to survive.

Writing Prompt-Survival

After we crashed i would go find food, and my shelter would be on the plane. I would have luggage on the plane, so i would have extra clothes, hopefully there is blankets on the plane. Where there are holes on the plane because of the crash, i would put some kind of barrier to keep out animals. Hopefully the pilot survives, so he can see if there is any way of communicating to the mainland.

Aquaponics

Our group decided to do a basic aquaponics system, where the lettuce and basil are floating on the water. We used styrofoam that has cups filled with rock to hold our plants just above the water, so the roots get air. We got feeder fish for our aquaponics system, that live in a very decorative tank.

Writing Prompt

If I could live in a movie I would live as Maui in Moana. Being able to transform into any living thing on earth would be awesome. Except i would use these powers to experience the life of different living things, and also being a demigod would be awesome.

Book response

In the next couple of chapters i think that el gato will be ready to play in a league, because of the training he is doing in the forest. Or el gato will play in his community and scouts will come see him play and he will go on from their.

NFL Player Protests During the National Anthem

The protests by professional athletes is kind of ridiculous. Not respecting the american flag just because you do not like your president is ridiculous. America is a great country but I get the person at the head is a maniac, you should still respect the flag. In the CNN article, Stephen Curry's handle of the situation is in fact better then the way entire teams did not appear for the national anthem. He is not disrespecting the flag he is showing that he does not tolerate people like Trump.

Keeper

I am reading a novel by Mal Peet called the Keeper. El Gato, goalkeeper of the world cup champions, has an interview with veteran soccer reporter Paul Faustino. The interview starts with some background stuff about El Gato. In his childhood he was no good at soccer, when he got the ball his teammates yelled "leave it." El Gato decided to stop playing soccer and instead he ventured into the forest and explored. "It was giving up soccer that made me a soccer player," El Gato said. He explored and came upon a mysterious field one day and that is where he played soccer.

Climate Change Is Transforming the World's Food Supply

Not only are we losing the amount of food quantity to climate change, we are also losing food to crop pests. Already pests are responsible for 25-40 percent of crop loss and as climate changes they will expand to places they never existed. Plants may not have developed defenses for these pests, but also predators to the pests, like birds, will change their migration time because of climate change. The location of the agriculture in the world will change that will affect the global food supply. Human population growth predicted in the next 50 years will be in the tropics, food production near the equator will decrease.The food quality will decrease because of elevated carbon dioxide levels. Crops grown in elevated carbon dioxide will have lower levels of protein, zinc, and iron.

Book Response

Winter Hawk Star is a very good book about hockey. It is a short book, but it is a series of books called orca sports. I have read a couple and they were all very good, they are all roughly the same. The characters have problems outside of hockey, so while trying to play hockey, they are also trying to solve their problems.
